13 Dead, Dozens Hospitalised in Kuwait After Suspected Methanol Poisoning

Kuwait City – Thirteen expatriate workers from Asian countries have died and several others remain in critical condition following the consumption of alcohol believed to be contaminated with methanol, Kuwait’s Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday.

Since Saturday, hospitals across the country have treated 63 patients linked to the incident. According to health authorities, symptoms among the victims have ranged from blurred vision and vomiting to respiratory distress and loss of consciousness.

The Ministry said 31 patients required mechanical ventilation, 51 underwent emergency dialysis, and 21 have suffered permanent blindness or severe vision impairment as a result of the poisoning.

Officials are working with the Kuwait Poison Control Centre, law enforcement, and other agencies to trace the source of the contaminated drinks and identify those responsible for their production and distribution.

Public Warning Issued
Authorities have urged residents to avoid consuming unregulated alcoholic beverages and to immediately seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms of methanol poisoning. The Ministry has also encouraged the public to report suspected cases via hospital emergency departments or dedicated hotlines.

Methanol, a toxic form of alcohol, can cause severe health complications including organ failure, neurological damage, and death if ingested. Even small amounts can lead to blindness or permanent disability.

The investigation remains ongoing as health and security agencies continue to monitor cases and prevent further incidents.
