Digital Media Drives Sustainable Development in Arab States

Arab media officials have highlighted the growing influence of digital media in advancing sustainable development, urging closer integration between official channels and online platforms to navigate a rapidly changing digital landscape.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency during the International Government Communication Forum in Sharjah, Abdulrahman Majrashi, Head of Saudi Arabia’s Government Communication Centre, emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments, influencers, and digital platforms to meet sustainability goals.

Majrashi cited Saudi initiatives as examples of effective digital engagement. The “ImpaQ” influencer forum connected over 1,500 influencers and drew more than 30,000 visitors, demonstrating the power of digital platforms to amplify government messaging. He also mentioned the “Mawthooq” licence issued by the General Authority of Media Regulation. This licence officially recognises influencers, promoting accountability and responsible content while bridging the gap between official and digital communication channels.

Dr. Zaid Al-Nawaiseh, Secretary-General of Jordan’s Ministry of Government Communication, stressed the need to improve media literacy among youth. He explained that media is no longer confined to traditional institutions. It now exists in an open digital environment where misinformation can spread quickly. Jordan has responded by introducing university courses focused on digital media since 2020. These programs teach students how to verify information, distinguish factual reporting from disinformation, and counter hate speech.

According to Dr. Al-Nawaiseh, these initiatives encourage critical thinking, responsible media use, and civic engagement. They also help young people address national challenges through informed participation, linking digital literacy with broader social and development goals.

The discussions at the Sharjah forum underscore a shift in how Arab governments view media. Beyond traditional messaging, digital platforms are now seen as essential tools for achieving sustainability targets, promoting responsible communication, and fostering societal engagement.

As governments continue to integrate official and digital media strategies, the focus is moving toward building partnerships, educating youth, and creating a digital ecosystem that balances influence with accountability. This approach highlights how targeted digital initiatives can drive measurable social and development outcomes while keeping citizens informed and engaged.
