Air Canada Cancels 500 Flights Daily as Flight Attendant Strike Affects 130,000 Travellers

Toronto, Canada – August 15, 2025 – Air Canada, the country’s largest airline, is facing a major operational disruption as a strike by over 10,000 flight attendants has led to approximately 500 flight cancellations per day. The labour action has impacted an estimated 130,000 passengers and is expected to result in a full shutdown by August 16 if negotiations remain stalled.

Strike Details and Flight Cancellations
The phased shutdown began on August 14, affecting both Air Canada’s mainline and Air Canada Rouge operations. On the first day, 34 flights were grounded, affecting nearly 8,000 passengers, while 19 additional cancellations were caused by unplanned crew shortages. Air Canada Express flights, operated by Jazz and PAL, continue to operate, covering roughly 20% of the airline’s network.

Reasons Behind the Strike
The dispute follows the expiration of a 10-year collective agreement earlier this year. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is demanding wage increases aligned with industry standards and inflation, along with compensation for unpaid duties such as boarding and safety checks. Current pay is calculated only for “block hours,” with entry-level wages starting at C$27,000. CUPE states that Air Canada’s offer of a 38% pay increase over four years does not match inflation or market rates.

Passenger Impact and Airline Response
Air Canada estimates more than 100,000 customers will be affected by the strike, with approximately 25,000 Canadians potentially stranded abroad once the shutdown is complete. Analysts predict that the airline is losing upwards of C$50 million per day in refunds, rebookings, and lost tourism revenue. The airline has requested government intervention under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code for binding arbitration, but no commitment has been made by the federal authorities.

Flight Resumption Outlook
Even if an agreement is reached swiftly, Air Canada warns that full operations could take a week to restore. Travellers are advised to check the airline’s website for real-time flight updates and rebooking options.
