Abu Dhabi Deploys AI Traffic Lights to Ease Congestion on Sheikh Zayed Street

Commuters on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street can expect smoother drives as Abu Dhabi introduces AI-powered smart traffic lights designed to tackle congestion and improve traffic flow.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has started rolling out this innovative system at seven major entry points, using a method called Ramp Metering. Unlike traditional traffic signals, these lights adapt in real time using AI and sensor data to manage vehicle flow efficiently.

How the AI System Works

  • Real-time traffic tracking: Cameras and sensors monitor vehicle density.
  • Adaptive signal control: During peak congestion, lights limit entry to main roads.
  • Optimized flow: When traffic eases, lights adjust to reduce unnecessary stops.
  • Benefits: Reduces delays, improves road safety, and lowers emissions from idling cars.

Locations for AI Traffic Lights

By strategically placing these lights at the city’s busiest bottlenecks, Abu Dhabi aims to minimize stop-and-go traffic, improve commute efficiency, and support its smart mobility and sustainability goals.

While currently limited to seven locations, the system may expand citywide if proven effective. So the next time you cruise along Sheikh Zayed Street without delays, artificial intelligence will be behind your smooth ride.
