Dubai’s Game-Changing Plan: World’s Largest Airport by 2032

Dubai is preparing to reshape global aviation with the next stage of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, confirmed that DWC will become the emirate’s main airport by 2032, overtaking Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Key Numbers Driving the Expansion

  • DXB handled 92 million passengers in 2024.
  • Traffic could exceed 100 million annually by 2026.
  • Expansion cost for DWC is projected at $35 billion.

A Passenger-First Strategy

Unlike traditional mega-airports, Dubai plans to divide DWC into eight self-contained terminals, each designed to handle around 32 million passengers. These terminals will connect through a high-speed underground rail network.

Griffiths emphasized that the goal is not only scale but service quality. Passengers will benefit from:

  • Shorter walking distances
  • Seamless check-in and border control through biometrics
  • Quicker access to lounges, retail, and boarding gates

Smart Systems and AI Integration

DWC will feature next-generation airport systems that streamline travel. Passengers will clear formalities within seconds using facial recognition. Artificial intelligence will personalize services, ensuring discreet support for travelers needing special assistance.

Dubai International already uses the sunflower lanyard system for passengers requiring extra care and recently launched an assisted travel lounge. Griffiths says AI will allow staff to anticipate needs without disrupting privacy.

Redefining Travel Experience

Paul Griffiths’ vision is to restore a sense of exclusivity to air travel, making every passenger feel valued, regardless of class. His formula for success:

Design + Technology + Service Innovation = Modern Arabian Hospitality

With DWC’s expansion, Dubai aims to set a new global benchmark for both efficiency and hospitality.
